Kendo / Iaido
At Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club St Austell Iaido and Kendo are incorporated into our system, following the lineage of Hasegawa Chikaranosuke Eishin we continue to practice the Hasegawa Eishin Ryu along side standard Kendo remnai kata and Yamamoto Ke Den Touhou Kodachi Batto. The various sword systems focus on the drawing of a katana or kodachi and cutting at the same time in a single movement, this is played out in a series of waza (forms) designed to prepare for any eventuality. The waza also incorporate a great deal of scenarios to cater for defending against such an attack, each set of waza become more advanced in the techniques as the practitioner develops. Iaijutsu is performed as solo practice using an Iaito (a blunt metal katana) however In addition we practice various striking and blocking techniques in pairs using either Shinai (a bamboo sword), a Bokto/ Bokken (wooden sword often made of oak), a Naginata (medieval glaive) or a Yari (spear) by combining the different training practices we aim to achieve a well rounded understanding and ability using a sword.
